2025 Super-Regionals Day 4

We have four games today, all decisive Game 3's, to determine the remaining teams in the Women's College World Series...

Georgia-Florida

Gators' (home team) run in first inning -- from three singles -- continues to hold up... UF continues to lead 1-0 after three and a half... Gators with eight hits in three innings but only one run!... This game has been in a weather delay for a while, but has resumed... B4, Florida with two walks to open the half-inning, but doesn't score... Bulldogs batting T5... B5, Gators with two-out, two-run homer by Rylee Holtorf (video) to get a cushion, leading 3-0... Florida now up 5-0 T6... T7, Georgia down to final at-bats... Infield error and UGA homer cut Bulldogs' deficit to 5-2... Next two batters retired... Line single up the middle... Force at second ends it, Gators advance to WCWS...

Mississippi-Arkansas

Now underway... Ole Miss with four in T1, but Arkansas with bases loaded on three walks, one out, in B1... K for second out...  Another walk to give Hogs a run (now 4-1 Rebels), but then foul out to end the inning... Arkansas scores three in B2, to even things up at 4-4... Rebels now batting T4... Ole Miss rallies for a run in T4 to lead 5-4... T5, Rebels threatening again with runners on first and second and one out... Line single to left drives in runner from third (6-4 Ole Miss), runner advances from first to third and batter takes second, as throw to plate gets away... Arkansas pitching change... After K for second out, Hogs get out of the inning on great play by 2B-person Karlie Davison, who dives to snare one-hopper and throw batter out at first (video)... Crunch time for Arkansas, coming up in B7 trailing 7-4... Easy fly to left for first out... Walk to Bri Ellis (looked like pitcher wasn't giving her anything to hit)... Strikeout looking for second out... Another K for final out... First trip to WCWS for the Rebels... Since entering with one out in the second inning and going the rest of the game, Ole Miss pitcher Aliyah Binford compiled an impressive stat line (2 H, 2 BB, 1 R, 4 K). Per ESPN, Binford retired 16 of the last 17 Arkansas batters she faced!

Nebraska-Tennessee

Tennessee makes single run in the first inning -- an Ella Dodge homer -- stand up in a 1-0 win... Odd situation with Dodge homer. Unclear if ball went over the fence or hit the top of it (video).  Nebraska throws ball to third, getting tag on Dodge who was on home-run trot. Originally ruled out, but review shows ball left the park... Nebraska had bases loaded in the fifth with two out, but Vol pitcher Karlyn Pickens got key strikeout (video)... Classic pitchers' duel between the Vols' Karlyn Pickens (2 H, 1 BB, 10 K) and Huskers' Jordy Bahl (4 H, 0 BB, 4 K)...

UCLA-South Carolina

The Bruins scored single runs in the first and fifth innings, and their 2-0 lead has stood up as the Gamecocks come up in B6. SC's offense, having scored a combined 13 runs in the first two games, has only two hits today through five innings (with the Nos. 1-4 hitters in the lineup 0 for 8, per ESPN)... HBP for Gamecocks to start of B6... Fly-out to warning track in right for first out... A second fly-out to almost the same spot... UCLA taking out pitcher Kaitlyn Terry in favor of Taylor Tinsley... Infield hit (tough grounder to left side of infield, throw to first not in time), giving SC runners on first and second with two out... 3-1 count on next batter... Called strike... Strikeout swinging... On to the seventh... Leadoff single for Bruins... Double gives UCLA runners at second and third... Foul pop by 1B for first out... IBB to Megan Grant, loading bases... Rylee Slimp (today in an 0-for-3 slump) comes up... 2-0 count... 3-0... High strike for 3-1 count... Another called strike, full count... Apparent foul grounder, but initially called fair. Being reviewed to see if ball touched a tiny bit of chalk on the third-base-line, but final call is foul... Still 3-2 on Slimp... Another foul... Slimp indeed breaks out of slump, singles to right, bringing in two, now 4-0 UCLA. Runners on second and third with one out... Next batter's bloop to CF falls in, 5-0 Bruins, runners on corners... Infield hit (hard grounder to P, who has no play), loading bases... SC pitching change... K for second out... Foul out to left, ending UCLA rally... Gamecocks come up in B7, needing at least five runs to stay alive... Hard single to right to lead things off... Great jumping snare by UCLA SS Kaniya Bragg on hard liner (video), one down...  Full-count strikeout for second out... Easy pop to SS for final out, Bruins on to WCWS...

NiJaree Canady Transferring to -- of All Places -- Texas Tech

NiJaree Canady, whose sub-1.00 ERA helped lead Stanford to the Women's College World Series in both her years with the Cardinal, announced on July 24 that she is transferring to Texas Tech. I've lived in Lubbock for 27 years and can say that the town has been improving with a greater selection of restaurants and shops, and a new downtown performing arts center. Likewise, nice new facilities have been dotting the Texas Tech campus . Still, it seems unlikely that Canady would have become a Red Raider without the $1 million annual Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal for her, made possible by the donation of a Texas Tech alumni couple. So stunning an event is this, even in the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, that the New York Times  even ran a behind-the-scenes story on Canady's path to Texas Tech. I look forward to being in the stands to watch Canady pitch next spring, an opportunity I never expected to have.

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

2024 WCWS -- Day 6

Oklahoma has kept its quest for a fourth straight WCWS title alive with a 6-5 eight-inning win over Florida to advance to the championship round. The Sooners will take on Texas in a two-out-of-three series beginning Wednesday night. Florida held a 5-2 lead after three innings and looked well on its way to beating OU for the second straight day, which would have eliminated the Sooners and taken the Gators to the final round. However, UF scored no further runs, whereas Oklahoma chipped away with two in the fourth, one in the sixth, and one in the eighth. The final run came via Jayda Coleman's opposite-field walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the eighth.  Sooner starter Kelly Maxwell went the distance, allowing only four hits. Three of those hits were home runs within the first three innings; the only other Gator hit was an infield single in the top of the sixth. Maxwell also walked five and struck out eight. Florida starter Keagan Rothrock also went the distance, allowing 1...
