Super-Regionals 2026 -- Saturday

Today will feature play in seven series, with one team in each series a game away from reaching the Women's College World Series and the other team trying to force a decisive Game 3 tomorrow. Tennessee, whose series with Georgia started Thursday, has already qualified for the WCWS. I'll be live-blogging as many of the games as I can and updating the chart below, so please check back in during the day...

Alabama-LSU

Scoreless entering T2, with LSU the home team... Per ESPN graphic, Alabama has allowed no runs in 2026 NCAA tournament (27 consecutive scoreless innings). Vic Moten (pitching now for Bama) has a .91 Walks and Hits per Innings Pitched (WHIP), where values even slightly above 1.00 are really good. Teammate Jocelyn Briski is even further below 1.00 at .76... LSU threatening in B2 with runners on first and second, two outs... Bloop single to left, but not deep enough to score runner from second. Bases now loaded... Jalia Lassiter up for the Tigers... Deep drive to center is... caught, keeping intact Crimson Tide scoreless pitching streak... T3, after first two Bama batters retired, Kristen White walks and advances one base at a time on three wild pitches. In my 50+ years of watching baseball and softball (I'm 63), I don't think I've ever seen this happen before. 1-0 Tide... B3, LSU's Tori Edwards with two-out line single up the middle to drive in Alix Franklin, who had doubled, 1-1, Bama scoreless streak over... T4, Alexis Pupillo with leadoff homer to put Bama back up, 2-1...

Oklahoma-Mississippi State

OU-MSU underway, with Bulldogs as the home team... Audrey Lowry pitching for OU, Peja Goold for MSU... Scoreless after two... T3, Kai Minor with one-out triple double (official call changed from triple to double plus error, as MSU left-fielder played ball poorly)... Ella Parker walks, bringing up Kendall Wells... Wells singles to left-center, putting Sooners on top 1-0... Runners on second (Wells taking extra base on throw in) and third with one out... Walk loads bases... Another walk brings in a run, 2-0 Sooners... Grounder to left side of infield gets batter at first, another run comes in, 3-0 Sooners... Runners on second and third with two out... MSU pitching change, with Alyssa Faircloth coming in... Abby Dayton up... Passed ball  makes it 4-0, as both runners advance a base... Dayton fouling off some pitches... Walk, putting runners at the corners bringing up Sydney Barker... Lexi McDaniel pinch-hitting for Barker... McDaniel fouls off pitches... Dayton takes second on defensive indifference... Maestro call by OU coach Patty Gasso, as McDaniel delivers three-run homer deep into LF bleachers, now 7-0... Fly-out ends rally... We'll see if OU can maintain the lead, unlike yesterday... T4, Minor leads off with triple, needs single and homer for cycle... Wells up, sitting on 39 homers (trailing UCLA's Megan Grant, who is sitting on an NCAA single-season record 40)... Wells with pop-up for second out... Sooners strand Minor on ground-out to first (close play as 1B-person barely beats batter to the bag)... Five complete, still 7-0 Oklahoma... T6, one-out HBP, bringing up Minor, who already has double and triple... Minor hits one by 2B-person, ruled an error, putting runners on the corners... Grounder to first, fielder throws home and initial call is that runner from third is out. OU challenging... Hard to tell on replay, call may be upheld due to inconclusive evidence... Amazing new camera view suggests tag applied with runner's hand about an inch from the plate, but still awaiting ruling... Call stands, good job by ump... OU still batting, two outs, runners on first and second, and Wells at the plate... Fielder's choice at second ends the half-inning, still 7-0 OU... B6, Mississippi State with runners on first and second with two outs, looking to get on the Oklahoma-shaped scoreboard... Another single, loading the bases... OU meeting in the circle, but Lowry stays in... Run walked in on 3-2 count, now 7-1 Sooners... Deep fly-out ends inning... T7, Gabbie Garcia with one-out double... Rally fizzles... MSU coming up in B7 to try to stay alive. Otherwise, there will be a Game 3 tomorrow... Indeed, Game 3 will be needed, as OU finishes off MSU 7-1...

Florida-Texas Tech

Game on ABC rather than one of the ESPN channels... Jocelyn Erickson with two-runner homer off of NiJaree Canady in T1 for early 2-0 Gator lead... Keagan Rothrock starting again today for UF... Two innings complete, still 2-0... T3, Erickson singles (but thrown out at second), driving in Taylor Shumaker, who had doubled, now 3-0 Florida... Red Raiders start B3 getting runners on with two straight HBP... Back-to-back fly-outs bring in a run, now 3-1 Gators... Tech with runner on first with two outs... Infield single gives the Raiders runners on first and second... Foul-out ends threat... T4, two-out single and outfield misplay give Gators a runner on second... Madison Walker homers for 5-1 UF lead. Ball travels onto (or maybe over) roof of clubhouse structure behind left-field wall... Samantha Lincoln in to pitch for Canady... Next batter walks... Florida adds a single, but fly-out ends rally... B4, leadoff single for TTU... Double puts runners on second and third... Next batter hits ball on which UF tries to throw runner out at home, but she scores, now 5-2 Gators... Tech with runners on first and second with none out... First out on fielder's choice at second, runners now on corners... HBP loads bases with one out for Texas Tech (Florida appeal denied on batter leaning into pitch)... Potential go-ahead run at the plate for Red Raiders... K and fly-out end the threat, still 5-2 UF... T5, Erickson singles, third hit of day... After a strikeout, bunt-single gives Gators runners at first and second... After ground-out advances both runners, Kenleigh Cahalan singles in two, now 7-2 Florida... Cahalan steals second... Walker singles in Cahalan, now 8-2... Ella Wesolowski doubles, 9-2 Gators... Four-pitch walk... Shumaker single loads bases... Last four hits (plus walk) all with two outs... Erickson, who started the inning, pops up to end it... Still 9-2 heading into B6... Same score heading to T7... Gators with another run, upping lead to 10-2... Tech will need another Ole Miss-style rally to avoid a Game 3... Not today, as 10-2 is the final...

This Friday (and all remaining Fridays of the regular season), I will preview the upcoming weekend's games. Before doing so, I wanted to do an entry, primarily for sports fans who have not watched much softball, on differences they could expect to see between softball and baseball. The Sandy Plains Softball Association of Marietta, Georgia has produced a document entitled Fastpitch 101 , which details the similarities and differences in the rules of the two sports. Here are some of my own observations from over the years: 1. Because the bases are considerably closer together in softball (60 feet) than in baseball (90 feet), softball infielders consistently must pick up ground balls and make their throws to first base quickly, in order to get the runner. In other words, many (if not most) softball grounders result in "bang-bang" plays at first base, necessitating a lot of close calls by first-base umpires, who must detect whether the thrown ball (to the first-baseperso...
Washington used a first-inning grand-slam homer from pitcher Danielle Lawrie and some late insurance runs to defeat Georgia by a score of 9-3 in tonight's late game. The win gives U-Dub a spot in the best-of-three championship series against Florida starting Monday (Georgia had defeated Washington earlier today, 9-8 in nine innings, to force tonight's rematch). The Huskies thus claimed "top dog" status over Georgia on their side of the bracket. Florida got a two-out grand-slam homer from Ali Gardiner in the bottom of the seventh to edge Alabama 6-5. The Crimson Tide made a strong recovery in the tournament after looking "not ready for prime time" in an opening-round loss to Michigan. But, as a result of tonight's heartbreaking loss to the Gators, Bama is now eliminated. Lowrie's and Gardiner's grand-slams are among four that have been hit so far in this World Series.

Florida Shines at Kajikawa Classic

The University of Florida, ranked No. 14 and 15 in the two major national preseason polls, pulled two major upsets en route to an undefeated 5-0 performance at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic at Arizona State. Among the Gator victims were three Pac 12 schools: No. 3 Cal (by a score of 7-4), No. 5/6 Oregon (1-0), and No. 13/14 Arizona (14-3). Full results of the tournament are available here .
