2025 WCWS Day 4

Two elimination games today. There's a new twist to the matchups at this stage. Essentially, UCLA and Oklahoma, yesterday's two losing teams, have switched brackets.
  • UCLA, who had been in a bracket with Texas Tech, Oregon, and Mississippi, now switches to the other bracket, playing Tennessee today, with the winner needing to beat Texas twice to advance to the championship round (Texas would need only one win).
  • Oklahoma, formerly in a bracket with Florida, Texas, and Tennessee, will next play Oregon, with the winner needing to beat Texas Tech twice to make the championship round (Texas Tech would need only one win).
Oregon-Oklahoma

B1, with one out, Duck 2B Kaylynn Jones possibly saves two runs with snare of hard line-drive with Sooner runners on second and third (video). Now two down... Walk to load the bases for Cydney Sanders... Foul pop to 3B-person ends threat... Still 0-0... T2, Dezianna Patmon, one of Oregon's postseason offensive heroes, drills a two-out, solo-shot to center (video), making it 1-0 Ducks... Ducks follow up with line-single to left... K ends threat... B2, Isabela Emerling answers for Sooners (video), 1-1 game... Oklahoma with runners at the corners and two outs... K to end threat... T3, back-to-back singles for Oregon to start the inning, runners on first and second... Sooner SS Gabbie Garcia with nice grab of bloop to short left, doubles off runner at second (video)... Walk to give Ducks first and second with two out... K to end threat... B3, two-run homer for Sanders (video), making it 3-1 Sooners... Infield error and HBP give Oklahoma a two-out threat to pad its lead... Foul-out to left ends threat... Sanders's second homer (B5) extends Oklahoma lead to 4-1... Ducks batting T6... No further scoring -- 4-1 Oklahoma is your final...

UCLA-Tennessee

UCLA (the visitors) and Tennessee are tied 2-2. The Vols' Laura Mealer delivered a two-out, two-run single in B1 (video) for a 2-0 lead, but Alexis Ramirez (video) and Sofia Mujica (video) hit solo shots in T2 to even the game 2-2... After Tennessee takes 4-2 lead in B5, UCLA stages two-out rally for two in T7 -- on a Jordan Woolery single and Megan Grant home-run (video) -- to tie it at 4-4... An unusual controvery erupted, as Grant appeared to miss touching home plate (here, here, and here). However, she was originally called safe and failure to touch home was deemed unreviewable (apparently something known as "Appendix G" of the rulebook)... B7, Tennessee had runners on first and second with one out, but hit into a line-out double-play (video)... T9, Bruins couldn't capitalize on bases-loaded, two-out situation... B9, Mealer's one-out single (video) drives in Taylor Pannell, who had led off with a double... Tennessee stays alive with 5-4 win...

NiJaree Canady Transferring to -- of All Places -- Texas Tech

NiJaree Canady, whose sub-1.00 ERA helped lead Stanford to the Women's College World Series in both her years with the Cardinal, announced on July 24 that she is transferring to Texas Tech. I've lived in Lubbock for 27 years and can say that the town has been improving with a greater selection of restaurants and shops, and a new downtown performing arts center. Likewise, nice new facilities have been dotting the Texas Tech campus . Still, it seems unlikely that Canady would have become a Red Raider without the $1 million annual Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal for her, made possible by the donation of a Texas Tech alumni couple. So stunning an event is this, even in the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, that the New York Times  even ran a behind-the-scenes story on Canady's path to Texas Tech. I look forward to being in the stands to watch Canady pitch next spring, an opportunity I never expected to have.

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

2024 WCWS -- Day 6

Oklahoma has kept its quest for a fourth straight WCWS title alive with a 6-5 eight-inning win over Florida to advance to the championship round. The Sooners will take on Texas in a two-out-of-three series beginning Wednesday night. Florida held a 5-2 lead after three innings and looked well on its way to beating OU for the second straight day, which would have eliminated the Sooners and taken the Gators to the final round. However, UF scored no further runs, whereas Oklahoma chipped away with two in the fourth, one in the sixth, and one in the eighth. The final run came via Jayda Coleman's opposite-field walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the eighth.  Sooner starter Kelly Maxwell went the distance, allowing only four hits. Three of those hits were home runs within the first three innings; the only other Gator hit was an infield single in the top of the sixth. Maxwell also walked five and struck out eight. Florida starter Keagan Rothrock also went the distance, allowing 1...
