2025 WCWS Championship Round -- Game 2

Bottom of the fifth in scoreless game, with Texas Tech having the bases loaded and two out (previously had second and third with one out)... Alana Johnson, a tough hitter, at the plate against Texas's Cambria Salmon... 0-2 count... Now 1-2... Short foul bloop narrowly escapes Longhorn catcher... HBP to bring in game's first run, 1-0 Texas Tech... Pitch gets away (wild-pitch), bringing in another Raider run, 2-0... Easy fly to center ends Tech threat... UT with just six more outs vs. NiJaree Canady to score at least two runs...

T6, leadoff foul-out to left... Mia Scott with solo shot to center (video) to cut UT deficit to 2-1... K for second out... Easy foul pop to third for final out...

B6, Citlaly Gutierrez in to pitch for the Horns... Red Raiders get one-out walk... Texas has trouble with slow grounder to 1B-person who has to go several feet away from the bag to field the ball and the toss to 2B-person covering first gets away. If 2B-person had held onto toss, batter probably would have been out... Lead runner for TTU gets to third... Runners at the corners with one out... Teagan Kavan coming in to pitch... Sac-fly to center brings in runner from third, 3-1 Tech, with two outs (runner from first advances to second)... TTU lead now up to 4-1, as infield grounder mishandled (apparently ruled a hit, though) and runner scores all the way from second (running through coach Gerry Glasco's stop-sign)... HBP giving Raiders runners on first and second with two out... Grounder to short ends the damage...

T7, Horns with three outs left to get at least three runs... Katie Stewart leading off... 3-2 count as Stewart fouls off pitches... Hard grounder to short, Tech can't field it on a big hop. Leadoff batter on first... Quick 0-2 count on Victoria Hunter, but then HBP. Horns with two on and none out... Leighann Goode doubles to left (fielder just couldn't snare it and ball rolls away a bit) driving in one, now 4-2 Tech... Tying runs on second and third with none out for Katie Cimusz (apparently hitting for Kaydee Bennett)... 0-2 count... Cimusz fouling off pitches... Sac-fly to left cuts UT deficit to 4-3, runner at second stays put... Grounder for second out, advancing tying run to third... Kayden Henry with 0-2 count... K to end the game and send us to a decisive third game tomorrow night!

Texas Tech squandered a bases-loaded situation with one out in B1, whereas Longhorns couldn't capitalize on a T4 two-out, first-and-third opportunity...

Texas using a bullpen strategy tonight, starting Mac Morgan who went two innings, and then turning to Salmon... Teagan Kavan, who went the distance in Game 1, widely expected to come in later, although probably not if Longhorns get too far behind...

Washington used a first-inning grand-slam homer from pitcher Danielle Lawrie and some late insurance runs to defeat Georgia by a score of 9-3 in tonight's late game. The win gives U-Dub a spot in the best-of-three championship series against Florida starting Monday (Georgia had defeated Washington earlier today, 9-8 in nine innings, to force tonight's rematch). The Huskies thus claimed "top dog" status over Georgia on their side of the bracket. Florida got a two-out grand-slam homer from Ali Gardiner in the bottom of the seventh to edge Alabama 6-5. The Crimson Tide made a strong recovery in the tournament after looking "not ready for prime time" in an opening-round loss to Michigan. But, as a result of tonight's heartbreaking loss to the Gators, Bama is now eliminated. Lowrie's and Gardiner's grand-slams are among four that have been hit so far in this World Series.

Florida Shines at Kajikawa Classic

The University of Florida, ranked No. 14 and 15 in the two major national preseason polls, pulled two major upsets en route to an undefeated 5-0 performance at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic at Arizona State. Among the Gator victims were three Pac 12 schools: No. 3 Cal (by a score of 7-4), No. 5/6 Oregon (1-0), and No. 13/14 Arizona (14-3). Full results of the tournament are available here .
This Friday (and all remaining Fridays of the regular season), I will preview the upcoming weekend's games. Before doing so, I wanted to do an entry, primarily for sports fans who have not watched much softball, on differences they could expect to see between softball and baseball. The Sandy Plains Softball Association of Marietta, Georgia has produced a document entitled Fastpitch 101 , which details the similarities and differences in the rules of the two sports. Here are some of my own observations from over the years: 1. Because the bases are considerably closer together in softball (60 feet) than in baseball (90 feet), softball infielders consistently must pick up ground balls and make their throws to first base quickly, in order to get the runner. In other words, many (if not most) softball grounders result in "bang-bang" plays at first base, necessitating a lot of close calls by first-base umpires, who must detect whether the thrown ball (to the first-baseperso...
