2023 Super-Regionals -- Saturday

As shown in the chart below, two series are over and six teams will be trying today to clinch their spots in the Women's College World Series...

Washington vs. Louisiana-Lafayette just underway. Huskies lead series 1-0... Ragin' Cajuns threatening with runners on first and second B1 with two outs... K looking to end inning... Very tight game, with no scoring until U-Dub puts one across on a sac-fly in T6, 1-0 Huskies... ULL with a runner on second in B6 after single and one-out steal of second... Fly to right for second out... Up to Stormy Kotzelnick to keep Cajuns' rally alive and possibly score... 1-2 count... Fly to left ends inning... Per ESPN announcer, ULL is 0-for-8 with RISP... T7: Huskies add (potential) insurance run on steal of home (video), for 2-0 lead... ULL down to final at-bats to keep its season alive... One out on hard grounder (one-hopper?) to third and throw to first... Full count on second batter... Pop to SS, Cajuns down to last out... Full count again... K to end the game, Huskies on to WCWS...

Today's nightcap, featuring Alabama trying to tie its series with Northwestern, will begin at 8:00 pm Central... Bama out to early 1-0 lead... Wildcats threatening in B2 with runners at first and second and none out... Two straight fly-outs, runners not advancing... NW called for runner leaving early, which ends inning early... B3, Wildcats with runners on first and second, two outs... Walk to load bases... Full count to Angela Zedak... Out looking on off-speed pitch... T4, Crimson Tide with runners on first and second and none out... Force at second for first out, runners now at the corners... K for second out... NW brings in yesterday's pitcher, Danielle Williams... K for third out... Wildcats coming up in B4... Wildcats tie score 1-1 in B5, on single, wild pitch, and another single... Runner on first with one out... Oppo flare to left gives NW runners on first and second... Montana Fouts replaces Jaala Torrence in the circle for Alabama... Fly to left-center for second NW out... And fly to CF for third out... T7, still 1-1, Bama with runner on second, one out... Ground single up the middle by Ashley Prange drives in go-ahead run, 2-1, Prange takes second on throw home (video)... Bunt (probably not intended as a sacrifice) advances Prange to third but batter thrown out at first for second out... K for third out... Wildcats need a run if they want to avoid a Game 3... Skyler Shellmyer leads off for NW... Liner to third for first out... Kansas Robinson up next... K looking... Jordyn Rudd is Northwestern's final hope... 1-2 count... Borderline swing on pitch in dirt ruled a strike... Bama wins 2-1 to even the series... (When ESPN announcer Mike Couzens identifies himself and color analyst Kayla Braud, it sounds like "My cousin Kayla Braud.")

Utah out over San Diego State 7-1 midway through the fourth, as Julia Jimenez grand-slam breaks things open... Should the Utes hold on, there would be a deciding Game 3 tomorrow... Utah wins 10-1 via run-rule. We'll have a Game 3...

Stanford has defeated Duke 7-2 to send the Cardinal to the WCWS...

Tennessee out to 1-0 lead vs. Texas... Still 1-0 T6... Volunteers pull away late with two runs in the sixth and six in the seventh to win 9-0 and advance to WCWS...

Oklahoma leads Clemson 2-0 T3... ESPN cameras catch former Sooner and Dallas Cowboys coach Barry Switzer, age 85, taking in the game... Tigers with a bit of a threat in B3, runners on first and second with one out... Line-out to second with runner doubled off gets Sooners out of the inning... 3-0 Sooners T4 on Alyssa Brito solo homer... Now 4-0... Clemson with two-out double B4... Followed by a base on balls... Three-run homer by Tigers' Maddie Moore cuts Clemson deficit to 4-3 (video)... B5, Clemson single and sac-bunt put tying run in scoring position with one out... OU goes to the bullpen for Michigan transfer Alex Storako, replacing Nicole May... McKenzie Clark goes deep for 5-4 Clemson lead (video)... HBP and line-single to center keep Tiger rally going with one out... Walk to load bases... Another pitching change, with Kierston Deal coming in... Four-pitch walk increases Clemson lead to 6-4... Now 7-4 on fielder's choice. Liner knocks pitcher's glove off but she remains calm, picks up the ball (which had rolled a little bit away), and throws to first... Grounder to second ends Tiger rally... Sooners up in T6. If any team can come up with three or more runs in a hurry, it's OU... Leadoff single for Oklahoma... Pitching change, with Valerie Cagle (she of the phenomenal 0.82 WHIP) taking the circle... Fly-out and grounder for force at second, two outs... Up to Grace Lyons get OU some runs... Grounds out to third to end Sooner half of the inning... Clemson goes quietly in B6...

OU will need at least three runs if it hopes to keep alive its 47-game winning streak! Rylie Boone leads off T7... 1-2 count after two foul balls... Short bloop single to right... Jayda Coleman up... Fly to left for first out... Tiare Jennings steps in... 1-2 count... Now full-count... Grounder to third for force at second, two out... Last OU hope in the person of Haley Lee... Once again, a 1-2 count... Flared single to right, tying run coming up in the person of Kinzie Hansen... You didn't think Clemson would get out of this without a little suspense, did you? 0-2 count to Hansen... You knew it would happen, a three-run home run (video)... Brito walk after 0-2 count (per NCAA.com, a nine-pitch at-bat: KFFFBBBFB)... Full-count walk to Cydney Sanders, giving OU runners on first and second with two outs... Jocelyn Erickson up... Another 0-2 count... Force at second ends OU rally. SS fields ball, looks like she could have gotten to the bag on time but flips ball to 2B-person... We go to B7 tied 7-7...

Can Clemson get a run to pull the upset after giving up two-out, two-strike, three-run, game-tying homer in the top of the seventh? Jordy Bahl in to pitch B7 for Sooners... 0-2 count on Tiger leadoff hitter... Easy fly to center for first out... Cagle comes up sporting a .472 batting average... A big hit would undo her difficult inning in the circle... I'd be surprised if she got a good pitch to hit... Sooners pitching to Cagle, first two balls fouled off... Pitch outside for 1-2 count... Foul ball... Ball for 2-2... Now 3-2... Foul... Swing and miss for second out... Up to Caroline Jacobsen to keep inning alive for Clemson... Jacobsen, swinging for fences, fouls one off at 1-2... Another foul... Pitch high, 2-2... Foul out, nice catch by OU 1B-person Sanders, falling into dugout (play reviewed for some type of ground-rules issue pertaining to whether fielder had both feet on field when catching ball but call of "out" stands)...

We go to the eighth, tied 7-7... Cagle still pitching... Grounder to SS for first OU out... Grounder to second for second out... Tiger 1B-person Madison May with great catch of infield flare to send Sooners down 1-2-3... B8, Clemson leadoff grounder to SS, close play at 1B called "out"... Call being reviewed but upheld... Bahl strikes out next hitter, two outs for Clemson... Grounder to second sends Tigers down 1-2-3...

Jennings leads off ninth with homer (video), 8-7 Sooners... Cagle moves from circle to 1B so she can potentially hit again... After OU walk, Clemson's Ally Miklesh makes great catch in left-center (waiting for video)... 6-4-3 DP to end T9... If Clemson can tie or win game in the bottom of the ninth -- a big if -- Miklesh's potentially run-saving catch will be something to look back on... Jadeyn Ruszkowski leading off for Tigers against Bahl... 0-2 count... Strikeout looking on high strike... Reedy Davenport grounds to second for second out... Up to McKenzie Clark to keep Clemson season alive... Swings for fences -- and misses -- on first pitch, 0-1... 1-1... Clark with bloop single, falls between trio of Sooners in right-center... Miklesh up. Can she add offensive heroics to her great defensive play? 1-1 count... 1-2, Clemson down to final strike... Fly out to center ends the game... OU wins 8-7, its NCAA-record 48th straight victory, and takes the series 2-0...

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

NiJaree Canady Transferring to -- of All Places -- Texas Tech

NiJaree Canady, whose sub-1.00 ERA helped lead Stanford to the Women's College World Series in both her years with the Cardinal, announced on July 24 that she is transferring to Texas Tech. I've lived in Lubbock for 27 years and can say that the town has been improving with a greater selection of restaurants and shops, and a new downtown performing arts center. Likewise, nice new facilities have been dotting the Texas Tech campus . Still, it seems unlikely that Canady would have become a Red Raider without the $1 million annual Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal for her, made possible by the donation of a Texas Tech alumni couple. So stunning an event is this, even in the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, that the New York Times  even ran a behind-the-scenes story on Canady's path to Texas Tech. I look forward to being in the stands to watch Canady pitch next spring, an opportunity I never expected to have.

Jordy Bahl Transferring from Oklahoma to Nebraska

The college softball world has thrown us a "Curve Bahl," if you will. Such is the unexpected news that Oklahoma ace Jordy Bahl has announced that she will transfer to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Bahl is from the Omaha suburb of Papillion, Nebraska. Three thoughts jump out at me: Bahl was absolutely indispensable to the Sooners' 61-1 national championship season, coming up with numerous clutch strikeouts in tight tournament games against Clemson (super-regionals, Game 2 ) and Stanford ( WCWS semifinals ).    OU benefited greatly this season via the transfer portal, bringing in Haley Lee  from Texas A&M,  Alex Storako from Michigan, and Cydney Sanders and Alynah Torres from Arizona State. Bahl's transfer is the first major one in the modern portal era (to my knowledge) in the other direction. Nebraska becomes an instant national championship contender, in my mind. Other players around the country may find it attractive to join Bahl in Lincoln but even if
