2023 Super-Regionals -- Friday

All eight super-regionals are active today, six that are just starting and two that began last night (Florida State-Georgia and Oklahoma State-Oregon). I'll comment on the games and list the winners in the chart below...

Evening games from western part of the country -- San Diego State at Utah and Louisiana-Lafayette at Washington -- are now getting underway.

San Diego State with 2-0 lead over Utah in the first... Utes come back and take 3-2 lead in second (video of third run)... Aztecs batting in T4, with runners at the corners and none out... A.J. Murphy double to the wall in right-center drives in two but Murphy thrown out at third trying to stretch double (video), now 4-3 SDSU... Single and error fielding grounder keep Aztec inning alive, with runners at first and second and two out... Single to left too shallow to drive in run but does load the bases for SDSU... Mac Barbara, with amazing career-OPS around 1.200, now batting... K to end threat... Still 4-3 Aztecs going to T5... SDSU with bases loaded and two outs... K to end threat... Heading to T7, still 4-3 SDSU... Aztecs strand runners at first and second, Utah coming up for final chance... One-out single for Utes in B7... Aztecs get final two outs to take Game 1...

Scoreless in Seattle between ULL and U-Dub, T2... Still scoreless T4... Huskies in B4 with runner on second and one out... SilentRain Espinoza ground-rule double gives U-Dub 1-0 lead (video)... Sydney Stewart follows with two-run blast to left, not sure if it made it to the lake behind outfield fence (video). Now 3-0 Huskies... Another single and homer, 5-0 Huskies... Washington wins 8-0 via run-rule...

No. 12 Northwestern at No. 5 Alabama now underway... Wildcats strike first on Angela Zedak solo homer (video), lead 1-0 T2... Northwestern adds another run in T3, making it 2-0... Bases-loaded double-play on grounder back to circle (out at home, then at first) allows Crimson Tide to escape further damage (video)... T4, Bama's Montana Fouts, pitching with hyperextended left knee in a brace, looks tentative in throwing to first on leadoff grounder back to her, airmails it, giving Wildcats runner on second... Grounder to short, runner going on the pitch, thrown out at third... One out, NW runner at first... Walk to next batter... Single to center makes it 3-0 Wildcats... Tide pitching change, Fouts replaced by Jaala Torrence, who pitched really well in last week's regionals (Torrence also authors children's books)... Steal of second, giving NW runners at second and third... K for second out... Grounder back to Torrence for third out... B4, with runner on first, Alabama scores a two-out run on Wildcat defensive miscues (bunt rolls between legs of 1B-person, NW loses track of runner going from first to third, who sprints home), now 3-1 Wildcats... Nothing further... Still 3-1 NW T6... Same score in T7... With two out, NW gets single and HBP... Grounder back to pitcher ends threat... Tide coming up in B7, needing at least two runs to avoid falling behind one game to none... Long fly-out for first out... Surprise bunt attempt turns into weak pop to pitcher, two down... Long at-bat, hitter fouling off 3-2 pitches... Ground-out to third ends it, 3-1 Wildcats...

No. 3 Florida State vs. No. 14 Georgia (Game 2) now underway... Seminoles (the visiting team in this game) lead 3-1, leading off the fourth... Two-run double by Kalei Harding in T3 is the difference (video)... 4-1 FSU T6... Georgia with rally going B6, cutting its deficit to 4-2. Kathryn Sandercock (typically a starter) coming on in relief... Walk puts UGA runners on first and second with none out... Infield pop-up for first out... Stirke-out swinging on long at-bat by Sydney Kuma for second out... Another K for third out... FSU takes the game (4-2) and the series...

No. 6 Oklahoma State, who took last night's series opener from Oregon, appears on its way to the Women's College World Series, leading the Ducks 7-0 in Game 2 as Oregon comes up in B5... The Cowgirls scored six in T5, culminating in Kiley Naomi's three-run shot (video)... Meanwhile, OSU pitcher Kelly Maxwell has not allowed a runner through four innings... Maxwell adds another perfect inning... And another in the sixth... T7, Cowgirls increase their lead to 8-0... and then 9-0. OSU finally retired, setting stage for Maxwell to seek final three outs of a potential perfect game! K for first out in bottom of the seventh... Allee Bunker's line-drive single up the middle ends the perfecto (looking for video)... Maxwell and the Cowgirls finish it off, 9-0, advancing to WCWS...

No. 13 Texas at No. 4 Tennessee underway... I guarantee the winner of the series will have orange as its main color and the school initials "UT"... Longhorns scoreless in T1... Vols with runners on first and second with no outs in B1, aided by Texas error... Fly-out to CF, lead runner tags and advances to third... Tennessee bunts but runner from third not coming home, runner from first goes to second, batter thrown out at first... Fly to right ends threat... Tennessee scores four in B2, the big blow being a three-run homer by Zaida Puni (video)... Horns score one in T3, bringing Vols up in the bottom half leading 4-1... The margin, though not the exact score, holds up, as Tennessee takes Game 1 5-2...

A double and two sac-flies in B1 have put No. 1 Oklahoma up 1-0 over No. 16 Clemson... B2, Clemson error and passed ball make it 2-0 OU... T3, Tigers with two-out single up the middle... Another single gives Clemson runners on first and second... Nothing comes of it, however... Sooners do down 1-2-3 in B3, a seemingly rare occurrence! Leadoff HBP for Clemson in T4... Force at second, so one out with runner at first... Single up the middle puts runners on first and second... Clemson batter shows bunt, which goes foul... Ends up striking out... Up to Reedy Davenport to try to get Tigers on the board... Fouls out to left-fielder... B4, OU with one-out infield single off of pitcher's leg... Fly to CF for second out... Cydney Sanders blasts two-run homer to left-center (video) for 4-0 Sooner lead... T5, HBP and single to left, plus errant throw back to infield, give Clemson runners on second and third with one out... Sharp grounder down the third-base line to the wall in left plates two runs for Tigers, cutting their deficit to 4-2, batter advancing to second (trying to find video, here we go)... Sooner 3B-person can't handle chopper, Tigers with runners on first and second with one out... Hard grounder to third fumbled, loading bases. ESPN announcer shouts that this is the third error for Oklahoma in the inning! (Call on last play changed to "hit.")... K for second out... Up to Jojo Hyatt to continue the rally for Clemson... Soft liner to second ends threat... Leadoff bunt single for OU B5... Followed by single up the middle, advancing runner to second... Infield hit to the hole at short loads bases with none out... Texas A&M transfer Haley Lee coming to bat... 3-0 count on Lee... Takes a strike... Grand slam (video), now 8-2 Sooners, a Jubi-Lee, if you will... After pitching change, Alyssa Brito knocks a solo-shot, 9-2 OU... That's your final, as the Sooners lead the super-regional series 1-0...

One early game is already over, with No. 9 Stanford scoring a mild upset over No. 8 Duke, 3-1 (video of the Cardinal's final run)...

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

NiJaree Canady Transferring to -- of All Places -- Texas Tech

NiJaree Canady, whose sub-1.00 ERA helped lead Stanford to the Women's College World Series in both her years with the Cardinal, announced on July 24 that she is transferring to Texas Tech. I've lived in Lubbock for 27 years and can say that the town has been improving with a greater selection of restaurants and shops, and a new downtown performing arts center. Likewise, nice new facilities have been dotting the Texas Tech campus . Still, it seems unlikely that Canady would have become a Red Raider without the $1 million annual Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal for her, made possible by the donation of a Texas Tech alumni couple. So stunning an event is this, even in the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, that the New York Times  even ran a behind-the-scenes story on Canady's path to Texas Tech. I look forward to being in the stands to watch Canady pitch next spring, an opportunity I never expected to have.

Jordy Bahl Transferring from Oklahoma to Nebraska

The college softball world has thrown us a "Curve Bahl," if you will. Such is the unexpected news that Oklahoma ace Jordy Bahl has announced that she will transfer to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Bahl is from the Omaha suburb of Papillion, Nebraska. Three thoughts jump out at me: Bahl was absolutely indispensable to the Sooners' 61-1 national championship season, coming up with numerous clutch strikeouts in tight tournament games against Clemson (super-regionals, Game 2 ) and Stanford ( WCWS semifinals ).    OU benefited greatly this season via the transfer portal, bringing in Haley Lee  from Texas A&M,  Alex Storako from Michigan, and Cydney Sanders and Alynah Torres from Arizona State. Bahl's transfer is the first major one in the modern portal era (to my knowledge) in the other direction. Nebraska becomes an instant national championship contender, in my mind. Other players around the country may find it attractive to join Bahl in Lincoln but even if
