2022 Conference Tourney Updates

We've got a good one going in the Big 12 tournament final, with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State tied 2-2 in the top of the fourth... The Cowgirls have the bases loaded with two out... Force-out at second ends the OSU threat... Cowgirls take 3-2 lead in top of fifth with an unusual run. After leadoff single and advancement to second on throwing error, second OSU batter bunts for base-hit, but then takes off for second to induce a run-down, while baserunner scores from second (video)... Sooners coming up in bottom of fifth...One-out homer by Jocelyn Alo ties it 3-3... Cowgirls coming up in top of sixth... OSU with runner on first, one out... Great OU catch in right field by Rylie Boone likely saves a run (video), but throw to double-up runner from first goes awry, so inning continues... Ground-out ends threat... Nothing for OU either in the sixth. Still 3-3 going to seventh... Cowgirls with some hard-hit balls in the top of the seventh, but no runs... Leadoff bunt single for Boone in bottom of seventh, as throw draws 1B-person off the bag... K for first out... Alo coming up... Deep fly-out for Alo, two down... Another fly-out ends the inning. Going to extras... "Technical difficulties" on the OU-OSU telecast... Online game-tracker available here... OSU top 8: Single and walk put runners on first and second with no outs... Another walk loads bases... Oklahoma pitching change... Fly-out to left for first out, runners don't advance... Telecast restored... Force out at home on infield grounder for second out... 2-0 count for next Cowgirl batter... Next pitch in dirt, 3-0 count... High, ball four, OSU go-ahead run comes in, 4-3... K ends threat...  OU bottom 8: Two-out infield chopper looked like it might end game, but throw to first gets away (runner doesn't advance to second)... Ground-out to short ends game, 4-3 Cowgirls, their first Big 12 tourney title in program history, only second loss overall this season for Sooners (49-2)...

In the SEC championship game later tonight, traditional powers Florida and Alabama will both be absent. Tennessee and LSU? Not them either. Georgia and Kentucky. Nope. Instead, Arkansas and Missouri will face off for the title... Arkansas off to 2-0 lead...

Earlier today, Florida State defeated Clemson for the ACC tournament title... Clemson had upset national No. 2 Virginia Tech in the semifinals...

Earlier today, Nebraska captured the B1G tourney with a 3-1 win over Michigan in eight innings... Yesterday, the Huskers and Wolverines scored dramatic victories over Ohio State and Northwestern, respectively. Nebraska got a walk-off double from Olivia Ferrell to eliminate the Buckeyes, whereas Taylor Bump's two-out, two-run blast in the top of the seventh keyed the Wolverines' 2-1 win over the regular-season champion Wildcats...

The Pac 12 doesn't have a conference tournament, but its race in the regular-season standings has come down to the final weekend. Arizona State beats Washington to give the Sun Devils (19-4 in conference) at least a share of the title. One game left for ASU at Washington and for UCLA (18-5) vs. Cal. A Bruin win and Sun Devil loss in the teams' finales would give UCLA a share of the conference championship.

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

NiJaree Canady Transferring to -- of All Places -- Texas Tech

NiJaree Canady, whose sub-1.00 ERA helped lead Stanford to the Women's College World Series in both her years with the Cardinal, announced on July 24 that she is transferring to Texas Tech. I've lived in Lubbock for 27 years and can say that the town has been improving with a greater selection of restaurants and shops, and a new downtown performing arts center. Likewise, nice new facilities have been dotting the Texas Tech campus . Still, it seems unlikely that Canady would have become a Red Raider without the $1 million annual Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal for her, made possible by the donation of a Texas Tech alumni couple. So stunning an event is this, even in the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, that the New York Times  even ran a behind-the-scenes story on Canady's path to Texas Tech. I look forward to being in the stands to watch Canady pitch next spring, an opportunity I never expected to have.

Jordy Bahl Transferring from Oklahoma to Nebraska

The college softball world has thrown us a "Curve Bahl," if you will. Such is the unexpected news that Oklahoma ace Jordy Bahl has announced that she will transfer to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Bahl is from the Omaha suburb of Papillion, Nebraska. Three thoughts jump out at me: Bahl was absolutely indispensable to the Sooners' 61-1 national championship season, coming up with numerous clutch strikeouts in tight tournament games against Clemson (super-regionals, Game 2 ) and Stanford ( WCWS semifinals ).    OU benefited greatly this season via the transfer portal, bringing in Haley Lee  from Texas A&M,  Alex Storako from Michigan, and Cydney Sanders and Alynah Torres from Arizona State. Bahl's transfer is the first major one in the modern portal era (to my knowledge) in the other direction. Nebraska becomes an instant national championship contender, in my mind. Other players around the country may find it attractive to join Bahl in Lincoln but even if
