Weekend Roundup (2/10-13/22)

No. 1 Oklahoma darted off to a 5-0 start on the season, winning a single game at UC Santa Barbara and then sweeping four games in the Mark Campbell Invitational in Irvine, California. The Sooners' four tournament wins come over Loyola Marymount, Mississippi State, No. 3 UCLA, and UC San Diego. OU outscored its opponents 41-1 over the five games. Only UCLA scored against Oklahoma, in a 4-1 Bruin loss on Saturday.

No. 2 Alabama started off 4-0 in the University of Arizona's Mike Candrea Classic. The highlight for the Crimson Tide was an 11-0 run-rule victory over the host Wildcats.

No. 4 Oklahoma State went 4-1 in Arizona State's Kajikawa Classic, suffering a 4-0 shutout loss to Duke.

No. 5 Florida went 4-0 at the South Florida tournament, including a 4-0 shutout over Michigan. The game was scoreless through five innings, but a two-out grand-slam homer in the top of the sixth gave the Gators their winning margin. UF's Lexie Delbrey came within two outs of a no-hitter, before giving up a Wolverine single in the seventh.

The next major tournament on the horizon is the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational, featuring 16 teams including UCLA, Washington, Oklahoma State, Florida State, Tennessee, LSU, and Texas.

Washington used a first-inning grand-slam homer from pitcher Danielle Lawrie and some late insurance runs to defeat Georgia by a score of 9-3 in tonight's late game. The win gives U-Dub a spot in the best-of-three championship series against Florida starting Monday (Georgia had defeated Washington earlier today, 9-8 in nine innings, to force tonight's rematch). The Huskies thus claimed "top dog" status over Georgia on their side of the bracket. Florida got a two-out grand-slam homer from Ali Gardiner in the bottom of the seventh to edge Alabama 6-5. The Crimson Tide made a strong recovery in the tournament after looking "not ready for prime time" in an opening-round loss to Michigan. But, as a result of tonight's heartbreaking loss to the Gators, Bama is now eliminated. Lowrie's and Gardiner's grand-slams are among four that have been hit so far in this World Series.
