2022 Preseason Polls

With the start of the 2022 softball season just days away, let's look at which teams are projected to be among the nation's best. As shown in the chart below, all four preseason polls I could find agree that defending Women's College World Series champion Oklahoma is still the team to beat. With the exception of the Softball America poll (which has Oklahoma State at No. 2) Alabama is the consensus pick as the nation's second-best team. The polls are divided as to whether UCLA should be No. 3 or 4. Florida and Florida State are No. 5 and 6 in most polls, although there are differences in whether the Gators or Seminoles are ranked higher.

College softball is currently in a "usual suspects" mode, where the same teams (for the most part) appear atop the rankings and in the WCWS year after year. As shown above, five of the six top teams in this year's preseason polls have won the national championship between 2012-2021 (with no 2020 tournament due to COVID-19). Again, the exception is Oklahoma State, which although never having won the WCWS, has played in it nine times (under NCAA auspices), including 2019 and 2021.

Here is where the top six teams will be opening their seasons this weekend (beginning Thursday):
  • Oklahoma: Mark Campbell Invitational at UC Irvine, which includes a Saturday showdown with UCLA.
  • Alabama: Mike Candrea Classic at the University of Arizona, named for the newly retired U of A coach. The Crimson Tide and Wildcats (ranked anywhere from 7 to 15 in the four polls) will meet Saturday.
  • UCLA: Hosts Cal State Northridge on Thursday) and UC San Diego and Nevada (Friday), before heading down to Irvine for a limited appearance in the Campbell Invitational.
  • Oklahoma State: Kajikawa Classic at Arizona State. The Cowgirls will feature pitcher Miranda Elish (rhymes with relish), who will be playing for her third school (Oregon, Texas, and now OSU).
  • Florida: University of South Florida tournament.
  • Florida State: Hosts JoAnne Graf Classic.

Washington used a first-inning grand-slam homer from pitcher Danielle Lawrie and some late insurance runs to defeat Georgia by a score of 9-3 in tonight's late game. The win gives U-Dub a spot in the best-of-three championship series against Florida starting Monday (Georgia had defeated Washington earlier today, 9-8 in nine innings, to force tonight's rematch). The Huskies thus claimed "top dog" status over Georgia on their side of the bracket. Florida got a two-out grand-slam homer from Ali Gardiner in the bottom of the seventh to edge Alabama 6-5. The Crimson Tide made a strong recovery in the tournament after looking "not ready for prime time" in an opening-round loss to Michigan. But, as a result of tonight's heartbreaking loss to the Gators, Bama is now eliminated. Lowrie's and Gardiner's grand-slams are among four that have been hit so far in this World Series.

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

Florida Shines at Kajikawa Classic

The University of Florida, ranked No. 14 and 15 in the two major national preseason polls, pulled two major upsets en route to an undefeated 5-0 performance at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic at Arizona State. Among the Gator victims were three Pac 12 schools: No. 3 Cal (by a score of 7-4), No. 5/6 Oregon (1-0), and No. 13/14 Arizona (14-3). Full results of the tournament are available here .
