Alabama has upset No. 1-seeded Florida, 3-0, in the opener of the teams' super-regional series. According to the Tide's Twitter feed, "Alabama pitching has only allowed one run in NCAA Tournament play, including a current streak of 28.2-straight scoreless innings."

Ole Miss, having been no-hit for the first five innings by UCLA frosh Rachel Garcia, has cut the Bruins' lead in half, to 4-2, in the top of the sixth. A single, homer (by Brittany Finney), single, and single, with none out, have the Rebels in strong position... A popped-up bunt is the first out of the inning, but a walk loads the bases for Ole Miss... A wild-pitch (or passed-ball) allows each Ole Miss runner to advance a base, making the score 4-3... A solid single to the left-center gap gives the Rebels a 5-4 lead... Another single, on a chopper over the third-baseperson, runners on first and second... Ground-out to pitcher advances runners to second and third, with two out... HBP reloads the bases, with Finney coming up again... Strike-out to end inning... Still 5-4 Ole Miss as UCLA comes up in bottom of seventh... Lead-off bloop-single to right... Wild-pitched to second... Fly-out to shallow left-center, runner doesn't advance... Grounder to short for second out, runner moves to third... Tying run scores as pitch gets away from catcher... Pop-up to end inning. We're going extras! Rebels leave runner on second in top of eighth... Bruins go quietly in bottom of eighth... Nothing for Ole Miss in top of ninth... nor UCLA in the bottom half... Rebels put first two batters on base in top of 10th -- a single to center and a mishandled bunt. Passed ball advances runners to second and third... Alyssa Gonzalez, who had two-run single in sixth for Ole Miss, does it again in 10th, but thrown out trying to stretch single to a double; 7-5 Rebels... Two more singles put runners on first and second for Ole Miss... Back-to-back strike-outs end the half-inning... UCLA again with its back to the wall, coming up in bottom of 10th... Bruins get lead-off runner on base, as blooper just eludes shortstop's glove... Soft bouncer to second results in double-play. UCLA down to final out... Pitcher Garcia singles on hard grounder to left... Bruins won't go away -- ground-ball single up the middle... Bubba Nickles triple off right-field wall ties game, 7-up (actually a double, with Nickles taking third on throw home)... Ground-out to short sends game to 11th... Nothing for Ole Miss in top half... UCLA leads off bottom half with a walk... Bunted over to second... Two-out single to right drives home winning run for UCLA, 8-7 is your final...

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

NiJaree Canady Transferring to -- of All Places -- Texas Tech

NiJaree Canady, whose sub-1.00 ERA helped lead Stanford to the Women's College World Series in both her years with the Cardinal, announced on July 24 that she is transferring to Texas Tech. I've lived in Lubbock for 27 years and can say that the town has been improving with a greater selection of restaurants and shops, and a new downtown performing arts center. Likewise, nice new facilities have been dotting the Texas Tech campus . Still, it seems unlikely that Canady would have become a Red Raider without the $1 million annual Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal for her, made possible by the donation of a Texas Tech alumni couple. So stunning an event is this, even in the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, that the New York Times  even ran a behind-the-scenes story on Canady's path to Texas Tech. I look forward to being in the stands to watch Canady pitch next spring, an opportunity I never expected to have.

Jordy Bahl Transferring from Oklahoma to Nebraska

The college softball world has thrown us a "Curve Bahl," if you will. Such is the unexpected news that Oklahoma ace Jordy Bahl has announced that she will transfer to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Bahl is from the Omaha suburb of Papillion, Nebraska. Three thoughts jump out at me: Bahl was absolutely indispensable to the Sooners' 61-1 national championship season, coming up with numerous clutch strikeouts in tight tournament games against Clemson (super-regionals, Game 2 ) and Stanford ( WCWS semifinals ).    OU benefited greatly this season via the transfer portal, bringing in Haley Lee  from Texas A&M,  Alex Storako from Michigan, and Cydney Sanders and Alynah Torres from Arizona State. Bahl's transfer is the first major one in the modern portal era (to my knowledge) in the other direction. Nebraska becomes an instant national championship contender, in my mind. Other players around the country may find it attractive to join Bahl in Lincoln but even if
