2023 WCWS Championship Round -- Game 1

Game 1 of the championship round between Oklahoma and Florida State is in a weather delay... There was an estimate of a half-hour delay, which would have the game start around 7:30 Central... An updated starting time is around 8:10 Central...

It will be Mack Leonard pitching for FSU and Jordy Bahl for OU... ESPN.com had an interesting article this morning about how Seminoles star Kathryn Sandercock has been pitching fewer innings this season to avoid burning her out...

Top 1 -- Florida State will be the visitors for this game... The Noles go down 1-2-3.

Bottom 1 -- After OU's leadoff hitter flies out, another weather delay is announced, possibly because of a lighting strike in the area... Action resumes, with the next two Sooners being retired to end the inning...

Top 2 -- Michaela Edenfield with a sharp liner up the middle for a single... Next batter strikes out swinging after 3-0 count (3-1 pitch questionably called a strike)... 6-4-3 double play to end FSU half-inning...

Bottom 2 -- One-out walk and steal give Sooners runner in scoring position... Lyons ropes liner off the wall, foul, just left of left-field line... Grounder to SS for second out, runner held at second... 1-2 count on next hitter... K-looking for final out...

Top 3 -- Hard grounder handcuffs OU 3B-person, FSU runner at first on error... Full count to next batter... Fouled off... K-swinging on off-speed pitch for first out... Steal of second. Throw was high but not clear if even a good throw would have gotten runner... Fly to CF for second out, runner stays put... Up to Kaley Mudge to drive in run... 1-2 count... Fouled off... Ball for 2-2 and then another foul... An another foul... You guessed it, another foul... K-looking (outside corner) to end Seminole threat...

Bottom 3 -- With one out, Rylie Boone doubles to right-center-field wall, ball lands in small gap between bottom of wall and warning-track dirt (waiting for video)... Jayda Coleman coming up... Fouls out to catcher on high pop behind home-plate, two outs... Up to Tiare Jennings... Nice play by FSU 1B-person, playing deep behind bag, grabs a hard shot on a short hop, beats Jennings to the base to end the inning...

Top 4 -- Still scoreless... Bahl bobbles bouncer back to her, FSU with leadoff runner on first... Strikeout (Bahl's fifth) for first out... HBP putting Seminole runners at first and second... Bouncer to first for second out, runners advance to second and third... Leonard up, seeking to help her own cause... 0-2 count... K-swinging to end FSU threat...

Bottom 4 -- Leadoff HBP for OU... Pitching change for FSU, Makenna Reid coming in... Kinzie Hansen doubles to wall in center (video), driving in game's first run, 1-0 Sooners... Passed-ball advances runner to third... Bloop single to right by Alyssa Brito makes it 2-0... Bunted to second, one out... Fly to right for second out... FSU can't handle short grounder in front of home, pitcher throws ball away to 1B, runner scores from second, 3-0 Sooners... Infield pop-up ends inning...

Top 5 -- Leadoff fly out... Followed by K... Fly to CF for a brief FSU half-inning...

Bottom 5 -- Ali DuBois in to pitch for FSU... Coleman bunt single... Sharp liner to SS, but can't double up runner... Two further hits make it 4-0 Sooners before side retired...

Top 6 -- Bahl working on a one-hitter, as FSU down to final six outs in Game 1... With two outs, Seminoles get their second hit but runner thrown out trying to stretch single into double...

Bottom 6 -- Allison Royalty in to pitch for Florida State... Odd play: Rylie Boone doubles, extends arms in celebration while standing, throw to second hits her arm and bounces away, Boone takes third... Jennings singles in Boone, making it 5-0 OU... Long ball from Haley Lee carrying potential for three-run, run-rule homer but Mudge reaches over LF wall to pull it in (video)... Line-out to third to end inning... 5-0 Sooners...

Top 7 -- Last chance for Florida State... Two-out walk but then a grounder back to the pitcher, Bahl-game! Sooners lead the championship series one game to none...

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

NiJaree Canady Transferring to -- of All Places -- Texas Tech

NiJaree Canady, whose sub-1.00 ERA helped lead Stanford to the Women's College World Series in both her years with the Cardinal, announced on July 24 that she is transferring to Texas Tech. I've lived in Lubbock for 27 years and can say that the town has been improving with a greater selection of restaurants and shops, and a new downtown performing arts center. Likewise, nice new facilities have been dotting the Texas Tech campus . Still, it seems unlikely that Canady would have become a Red Raider without the $1 million annual Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal for her, made possible by the donation of a Texas Tech alumni couple. So stunning an event is this, even in the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, that the New York Times  even ran a behind-the-scenes story on Canady's path to Texas Tech. I look forward to being in the stands to watch Canady pitch next spring, an opportunity I never expected to have.

Jordy Bahl Transferring from Oklahoma to Nebraska

The college softball world has thrown us a "Curve Bahl," if you will. Such is the unexpected news that Oklahoma ace Jordy Bahl has announced that she will transfer to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Bahl is from the Omaha suburb of Papillion, Nebraska. Three thoughts jump out at me: Bahl was absolutely indispensable to the Sooners' 61-1 national championship season, coming up with numerous clutch strikeouts in tight tournament games against Clemson (super-regionals, Game 2 ) and Stanford ( WCWS semifinals ).    OU benefited greatly this season via the transfer portal, bringing in Haley Lee  from Texas A&M,  Alex Storako from Michigan, and Cydney Sanders and Alynah Torres from Arizona State. Bahl's transfer is the first major one in the modern portal era (to my knowledge) in the other direction. Nebraska becomes an instant national championship contender, in my mind. Other players around the country may find it attractive to join Bahl in Lincoln but even if
