2022 Women's College World Series -- Sunday

ARIZONA-TEXAS: Wildcats and Longhorns underway in Sunday's second elimination game. Texas is the home team, with Hailey Dolcini in the circle... U of A goes quietly... Hanah (with one "n") Bowen in the circle for the Cats... UT likewise goes quietly in first... Still scoreless after two... Zona with runner on second, one out in top of third, after HBP and bunt... Fly for second out... Hard grounder to third, but UT fielder picks it up and throw out batter to retire side... Courtney Day solo-shot (video) puts Texas up 1-0 in bottom of third...  Single, walk, single to load bases for Arizona with none out in top of fourth... Carlie Scupin doubles deep to right, just inside the foul line, to drive in two (video), Zona leads 2-1... Pop to SS for first out... Texas pitching change, with Estelle Czech coming in... K for second out... Another K ends Wildcat threat... Horns with walk to lead off bottom of fourth... Line single up the middle gives UT runners on first and second, none out... Pitching change for Cats, with Devyn Netz coming in... JJ Smith hits three-run homer (video) to give Texas 4-2 lead after four... Nothing for U of A in top of fifth... Janae Jefferson, the Longhorns' sparkplug, leads off the bottom of the fifth with a double... Bunted to third, now one out... Sac-fly makes it 5-2 Longhorns... Great catch in LF by Lauren Burke (video) closes out Arizona in top of sixth... Zona with three outs left to keep its season alive... Leadoff single for U of A in top of seventh... Fly to right for first out... Double-play on grounder ends the game... Texas will move on to play Oklahoma State tomorrow, whereas Arizona is eliminated. Still, an amazing postseason run for Wildcats after they tied for last in the Pac 12...

FLORIDA-UCLA: The Gators and Bruins are underway on ABC in an elimination game... Holly Azevedo going for UCLA in the circle... Florida down quietly in top of first... Elizabeth Hightower pitching for Gators... Nothing for Bruins in their half of first... Leadoff single for Gators, top of second... Threat fizzles... Runners on first and second with two out for Bruins... 0-2 count on Kelli Godin goes to 3-2... Godin singles in first run of game, 1-0 UCLA, runners on second and third (Godin to second on throw home) with two out... Grounder ends threat... Florida's Katie Kistler prevents UCLA two-run homer with catch above the wall in bottom of third (video)... Still no score for Gators after three and a half, 1-0 UCLA... Top 4: UCLA bunts runner over to second, one out... UF pitching change, with Rylee Trlicek coming in... Dropped third strike rolls away, UCLA batter safe at first and runner from second takes third... SS can't field sharp grounder, run scores and Bruins have runners on first and second, still just one out, 2-0 UCLA... K for second out... Wild-pitch (or passed-ball) advances UCLA runners to second and third... Tough day at the office for Florida SS, although even if she fielded grounder up the middle cleanly, her body was moving toward outfield and throwing anybody out would have been extremely difficult... As a result of mishandling, however, two UCLA runs score instead of just one... Another pitching change, with Bruins leading 4-0... Nothing more for UCLA in the inning... Bottom 6: UCLA adds two more to make it 6-0, bases loaded with one out... Run-rule is in the picture... Savannah Pola drives one to wall on a couple bounces, scoring two and ending game 8-0 via run-rule (video)... Bruins' "reward" is a matchup with Oklahoma, with Bruins needing to beat Sooners twice...

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

NiJaree Canady Transferring to -- of All Places -- Texas Tech

NiJaree Canady, whose sub-1.00 ERA helped lead Stanford to the Women's College World Series in both her years with the Cardinal, announced on July 24 that she is transferring to Texas Tech. I've lived in Lubbock for 27 years and can say that the town has been improving with a greater selection of restaurants and shops, and a new downtown performing arts center. Likewise, nice new facilities have been dotting the Texas Tech campus . Still, it seems unlikely that Canady would have become a Red Raider without the $1 million annual Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal for her, made possible by the donation of a Texas Tech alumni couple. So stunning an event is this, even in the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, that the New York Times  even ran a behind-the-scenes story on Canady's path to Texas Tech. I look forward to being in the stands to watch Canady pitch next spring, an opportunity I never expected to have.

Jordy Bahl Transferring from Oklahoma to Nebraska

The college softball world has thrown us a "Curve Bahl," if you will. Such is the unexpected news that Oklahoma ace Jordy Bahl has announced that she will transfer to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Bahl is from the Omaha suburb of Papillion, Nebraska. Three thoughts jump out at me: Bahl was absolutely indispensable to the Sooners' 61-1 national championship season, coming up with numerous clutch strikeouts in tight tournament games against Clemson (super-regionals, Game 2 ) and Stanford ( WCWS semifinals ).    OU benefited greatly this season via the transfer portal, bringing in Haley Lee  from Texas A&M,  Alex Storako from Michigan, and Cydney Sanders and Alynah Torres from Arizona State. Bahl's transfer is the first major one in the modern portal era (to my knowledge) in the other direction. Nebraska becomes an instant national championship contender, in my mind. Other players around the country may find it attractive to join Bahl in Lincoln but even if
