UCLA-Virginia Tech

Rachel Garcia back in the circle for UCLA in this deciding game, after being given Game 2 off... VT gets a two-out single in the top of the first, but nothing comes of it... Keely Rochard, who held the Bruins to two runs in each of the two previous games, going for VT. (The fact that Rochard has a win and a loss in the series, based entirely on how many runs her teammates scored, illustrates the silliness of wins and losses as a pitching statistic, in my view.)... UCLA gets infield single to lead off bottom of first... Garcia singles, as well, advancing the runner to second... Pop-up to second for first out... Grounder to first for second out, but two UCLA runners now in scoring position... VT 2B-person can't handle chopper up the middle (ruled an error), giving Bruins the first run of the game. Runners now at the corners... Ground-out to second ends first inning, UCLA up 1-0...

HBP and stolen base (close call) give UCLA a runner at second in bottom of second inning... K for first out... Senior Bubba Nickles, out until recently with a wrist injury, now batting for the Bruins... Nickles walks... Hokies 2B-person has trouble with another grounder, allowing UCLA runner to score from second (now 2-0 Bruins) and leaving runners on first and second with one out... Garcia, trying to help her own cause, pops out... K ends inning...

Bruins' Briana Perez with a complete no-doubter home run to right-center (video). Looks like it landed atop a building or wall beyond the outfield fence. Now 3-0 UCLA after three innings... Maya Brady drives in a "bunch" of runs, with a three-run shot (video) in the bottom of the fifth, making it 6-0...   6-0 is your final, as the Bruins advance to their 30th WCWS. Garcia's resume for the night: 13 K's and only two hits allowed...

Missouri-James Madison

The Tigers, needing a win to stay alive, look headed toward one, leading 7-0 after two and a half. A three-run, opposite-field homer by Brooke Wilmes in the top of the second (video) is among the key hits for Mizzou... The Tigers take it, 7-1, forcing a decisive game tomorrow...

Arkansas-Arizona

No. 6-seeded Razorbacks, seeking to avoid elimination, batting in the top of the fourth of a scoreless game. Runner on first, one out... Nothing comes of it, Wildcats coming up in bottom of fourth... Razorbacks quickly get runners on first and second in top of fifth with no outs: hard grounder to third slightly bobbled allows runner to beat throw to first (ruled an error), followed by HBP... Foul-out to 3B-person near grandstands for first out... Braxton Burnside's hard liner rolls to wall in left-center, giving Arkansas 1-0 lead and runners on second and third (video)... K for second out... Walk loads bases... Routine fly to left ends threat... Bottom five: Wildcats' Alyssa Palomino goes opposite field for a two-run homer (video), making it 2-1 Zona... Next batter singles up the middle... Force at second on grounder, but no double-play as runner beats out throw to first... Infield single -- nice diving grab by Arkansas 2B-person, but runner beats throw to first... Grounder to short ends threat... Razorbacks will have two innings to at least tie the score or their season will come to an end... The only remaining runs -- two of them -- are scored by Arizona, making the final score 4-1 Wildcats... They advance to their 24th WCWS.

Florida-Georgia

Behind the arm of Mary Wilson Avant, unseeded Georgia has advanced to the WCWS and shut out No. 4-seeded Florida for the second straight day. Today's score was 6-0...

Alabama-Kentucky

No. 3 Alabama has likewise advanced, defeating Kentucky 4-1...

Oklahoma-Washington

The No. 1 Sooners seem well on their way to returning to the WCWS, leading Washington 7-1 after four innings... 9-1 is your final via run-rule, Sooners advance... In what I consider a noteworthy development, this game is being shown on one of the major broadcast networks (ABC) instead of the cable sports network ESPN...

Oklahoma State-Texas

The Cowgirls aim to continue their season-long domination of the Longhorns (discussed in yesterday's entry below) and advance to the WCWS... With OSU batting as the visitors, the score is 1-0 Cowgirls in the top of the fourth... A third-inning solo-shot to left-center by Kiley Naomi (video) is the difference... We're in an unexpected place in the bottom of the sixth. Texas right-fielder Jordyn Whitaker's solo shot (video) and  catcher Mary Iakopo's opposite-field two-run homer (video) have just given the Longhorns a 4-1 lead... Cowgirls, down to their final three outs, get a leadoff homer in top of seventh from Sydney Pennington to cut deficit to 4-2... Grounder to second for first OSU out... K (and throw to first after catcher dropped ball) yields second out... Grounder to short ends game, 4-2 Horns... Decisive Game 3 tomorrow!

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

NiJaree Canady Transferring to -- of All Places -- Texas Tech

NiJaree Canady, whose sub-1.00 ERA helped lead Stanford to the Women's College World Series in both her years with the Cardinal, announced on July 24 that she is transferring to Texas Tech. I've lived in Lubbock for 27 years and can say that the town has been improving with a greater selection of restaurants and shops, and a new downtown performing arts center. Likewise, nice new facilities have been dotting the Texas Tech campus . Still, it seems unlikely that Canady would have become a Red Raider without the $1 million annual Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal for her, made possible by the donation of a Texas Tech alumni couple. So stunning an event is this, even in the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, that the New York Times  even ran a behind-the-scenes story on Canady's path to Texas Tech. I look forward to being in the stands to watch Canady pitch next spring, an opportunity I never expected to have.

Jordy Bahl Transferring from Oklahoma to Nebraska

The college softball world has thrown us a "Curve Bahl," if you will. Such is the unexpected news that Oklahoma ace Jordy Bahl has announced that she will transfer to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Bahl is from the Omaha suburb of Papillion, Nebraska. Three thoughts jump out at me: Bahl was absolutely indispensable to the Sooners' 61-1 national championship season, coming up with numerous clutch strikeouts in tight tournament games against Clemson (super-regionals, Game 2 ) and Stanford ( WCWS semifinals ).    OU benefited greatly this season via the transfer portal, bringing in Haley Lee  from Texas A&M,  Alex Storako from Michigan, and Cydney Sanders and Alynah Torres from Arizona State. Bahl's transfer is the first major one in the modern portal era (to my knowledge) in the other direction. Nebraska becomes an instant national championship contender, in my mind. Other players around the country may find it attractive to join Bahl in Lincoln but even if
