WCWS Day 3 (2019)

It's "Survival Saturday," pitting one-loss teams, so that each of the four games will eliminate someone.

In the nightcap of this very long day, Alabama and Arizona are scoreless as the Crimson Tide bats in the top of the third... Bama has runners on first and second for slugger Bailey Hemphill with two outs... Hemphill smokes a liner to the left-center gap, making it 2-0 Tide... Bottom 4: A walk and a single give the Wildcats runners on first and second, with one out... A walk loads the bases for Reyna Carranco... K (after two balls to start) for second out... Hemphill with nice snare of liner for third out. Still 2-0 Tide... Bottom 7: Still 2-0... Arizona down to its final out of the season, with a runner on first... K to end the game. Alabama stays alive, Arizona eliminated.

Washington vs. Oklahoma State are now underway in the day's third game. OSU's Chyenne Factor robs UW of two-runner homer in bottom of second... No score, with the Cowgirls batting in the top of the third... Huskies coming up in bottom of fourth, still scoreless... UW pitcher Taran Alvelo striking out lots of Cowgirl hitters... Bottom 4: HBP and steal of second give Huskies a threat... Single to right puts runners on the corners... With two outs, Amirah Milloy drives in game's first run for Huskies. 1-0 UW... No further scoring in the inning... Alvelo has recorded 15 strikeouts of Cowgirl hitters up through (and including) the OSU half of the sixth... Still 1-0 Huskies, as they come up in the bottom of the sixth. Nothing doing for Washington, so OSU comes up for final chance to tie the game (or take the lead) in the top of the seventh... Alvero ends game with 16th K. Huskies escape with 1-0 victory. OSU eliminated.

Nothing for Florida in top of first... Bama's K.B. Sides with leadoff double... Now first and third with none out... Kaylee Tow belts homer to right, 3-0 Tide... It's become glorified batting practice for Alabama, as another homer makes it 6-0 Tide in the first... Alabama's lead is up to 10-0 after three... A three-run shot by Bailey Hemphill makes it 15-0 in the bottom of the fourth... We have a 15-3 run-rule (five-inning) win for Alabama... Florida is eliminated.

In the opening match-up, Washington and Minnesota are back on the field in a rain delay (with lightning in the area). The Huskies are now up in the top of the sixth with a 3-1 lead. As can be seen in this video, it was quite blustery in OKC... Via Twitter postings, here are videos of how all the runs (up to this point) have scored, in chronological order:
Huskies pitcher Gabbie Plain with eight strikeouts... through the first five innings.

Top 6: Sami Reynolds with a two-out double to the wall in center to drive home two runs, making it 5-1 Washington... Bottom 7: Gophers get single, followed by two outs... Minnesota not going quietly, however, as two walks and a double slice deficit to 5-3. Tying runners on second and third... Pitching change as Taran Alvelo in for Huskies... Gets strike-out to end the game. Washington wins 5-3... Minnesota is eliminated.

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

NiJaree Canady Transferring to -- of All Places -- Texas Tech

NiJaree Canady, whose sub-1.00 ERA helped lead Stanford to the Women's College World Series in both her years with the Cardinal, announced on July 24 that she is transferring to Texas Tech. I've lived in Lubbock for 27 years and can say that the town has been improving with a greater selection of restaurants and shops, and a new downtown performing arts center. Likewise, nice new facilities have been dotting the Texas Tech campus . Still, it seems unlikely that Canady would have become a Red Raider without the $1 million annual Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal for her, made possible by the donation of a Texas Tech alumni couple. So stunning an event is this, even in the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, that the New York Times  even ran a behind-the-scenes story on Canady's path to Texas Tech. I look forward to being in the stands to watch Canady pitch next spring, an opportunity I never expected to have.

Jordy Bahl Transferring from Oklahoma to Nebraska

The college softball world has thrown us a "Curve Bahl," if you will. Such is the unexpected news that Oklahoma ace Jordy Bahl has announced that she will transfer to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Bahl is from the Omaha suburb of Papillion, Nebraska. Three thoughts jump out at me: Bahl was absolutely indispensable to the Sooners' 61-1 national championship season, coming up with numerous clutch strikeouts in tight tournament games against Clemson (super-regionals, Game 2 ) and Stanford ( WCWS semifinals ).    OU benefited greatly this season via the transfer portal, bringing in Haley Lee  from Texas A&M,  Alex Storako from Michigan, and Cydney Sanders and Alynah Torres from Arizona State. Bahl's transfer is the first major one in the modern portal era (to my knowledge) in the other direction. Nebraska becomes an instant national championship contender, in my mind. Other players around the country may find it attractive to join Bahl in Lincoln but even if
