Based on the NCAA bracket, I have prepared my annual super-regionals chart (below). Links to game articles appear in the chart. Running commentary appears below the chart.
Series in italics began Thursday. All of the other series begin Friday.
Friday Night
UCLA is the first team to clinch a spot in the Women's College World Series, with a 3-2 win over Arizona to sweep the teams' series. The Wildcats scored two in the bottom of the first, with the Bruins countering with a run each in the second, third, and fourth innings.
It's Oregon, 6-1, over Kentucky to force a deciding third game.
Trailing Alabama 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, Washington scored a pair to tie the game and then got the winning run in the ninth: 3-2 Huskies.
Arizona State scores an easy 5-2 win over South Carolina.
Friday Early Evening
Game 2 between Florida and Texas A&M is getting underway. Aggies score three in the bottom of the fifth to take 5-4 lead, and there is no more scoring. Series tied 1-1.
LSU led Florida State 5-0 and 6-2, but withstood a late Seminole rally to win 6-5. Gotta love LSU's two-tone purple tiger-stripe jerseys! (Click on "LSU" in the chart above.)
Friday Late Afternoon
No. 4-seed Oklahoma leads No. 13-seed Arkansas 7-1 in the home (OU) half of the sixth. Your final is 7-2.
No. 7 Georgia (thevisiting home team in this game; stupid game-tracker!) leads No. 10 Tennessee 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Vols score two in the sixth and one in the seventh, but fall short, 4-3.
Thursday Night
Whereas last weekend's regionals went totally to form -- all 16 national seeds advancing -- Thursday night had one major upset and nearly two.
No. 16-seed Kentucky took the opener against No. 1-seed Oregon, 9-6. No. 15 Texas A&M was one strike away from beating No. 2 Florida and also had two chances on playable ground-balls to get the final out. But Aggie errors on those grounders and two walked-in runs gave the Gators the 5-4 win.
No. 3 UCLA's 7-1 win over No. 14 Arizona was the only easy win for a high seed.
