WCWS Day 1 (2016)

UPDATED SCHEDULE DUE TO THURSDAY-NIGHT RAIN-OUTS

GAME 3 -- ALABAMA vs. OKLAHOMA

Bama retired 1-2-3 in the top of the first... OU gets a runner via walk, but thrown out on steal attempt by wide margin to end first inning... Rain and wind picking up, but play continues into second inning... Crimson Tide goes 1-2-3 again in second, before tide of rain forces delay...

GAME 2 -- UCLA vs. AUBURN

Our next game will be a rematch of last year's extra-inning WCWS classic, won by Auburn 11-10 over UCLA (click here and then scroll down on the new page, for a summary)... Game underway... Round-the-horn ground-ball double-play retires UCLA in top of first... Auburn gets first batter aboard via HBP... Kasey Cooper doubles to right-center gap, leaving runners on second and third with none out... Weak infield pop-up, one down... Walk to load bases... Another HBP brings home game's first run... Paige McDuffee replacing Selina Ta'Amilo in circle for Bruins... Sac-fly to right makes it 2-0 Tigers... Another HBP loads bases and yet another one brings home run for 3-0 Auburn lead... Bad UCLA throw on routine grounder to 2B yields two more runs... Ground-out to third ends inning, 5-0 Auburn... After Auburn ups lead to 7-0 after three, Bruins show signs of life on three-run blast by Mysha Sataraka... Game over: 10-3 Auburn is your final...

GAME 1 -- GEORGIA vs. FLORIDA STATE

Joltin' Jessica Warren sends a blast to give Florida State a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first over Georgia... Pair of Seminole errors gives Bulldogs runners on first and second, none out, in top of second... Runners each advance a base on passed-ball... Back-to-back sac-flies tie the game, without Georgia getting a single hit... Ground-out ends half-inning... Top 3: Georgia again puts first two runners on, via a short bloop single and beating out a bunt... Meghan King replaces Jessica Burroughs in the circle for FSU... Pop-out on bunt attempt, one down... Hard single up the middle by Alyssa DiCarlo gives UGA 3-2 lead, runners on corners with one out... Another single up the middle, this time by Tina Iosefa, makes it 4-2... K for second out... Another K ends threat... Fast-forward to the bottom of the sixth: FSU's Alex Powers powers one over the left-field fence for a game-tying two-run homer... Seminoles with runners on first and second, two out, in bottom of sixth... Pop-up ends threat... Top 7: Airmailed throw to second on steal attempt puts Georgia runner on third... Scores on ground-out after throw to first (close play at plate)... 5-4 Dawgs... Noles coming up, down to final three outs... Nothing doing for FSU, as Georgia pulls it out (ESPN broadcast cut out before final out, but Game Tracker comes through)... Here's your key to the game:

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

NiJaree Canady Transferring to -- of All Places -- Texas Tech

NiJaree Canady, whose sub-1.00 ERA helped lead Stanford to the Women's College World Series in both her years with the Cardinal, announced on July 24 that she is transferring to Texas Tech. I've lived in Lubbock for 27 years and can say that the town has been improving with a greater selection of restaurants and shops, and a new downtown performing arts center. Likewise, nice new facilities have been dotting the Texas Tech campus . Still, it seems unlikely that Canady would have become a Red Raider without the $1 million annual Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal for her, made possible by the donation of a Texas Tech alumni couple. So stunning an event is this, even in the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, that the New York Times  even ran a behind-the-scenes story on Canady's path to Texas Tech. I look forward to being in the stands to watch Canady pitch next spring, an opportunity I never expected to have.

Jordy Bahl Transferring from Oklahoma to Nebraska

The college softball world has thrown us a "Curve Bahl," if you will. Such is the unexpected news that Oklahoma ace Jordy Bahl has announced that she will transfer to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Bahl is from the Omaha suburb of Papillion, Nebraska. Three thoughts jump out at me: Bahl was absolutely indispensable to the Sooners' 61-1 national championship season, coming up with numerous clutch strikeouts in tight tournament games against Clemson (super-regionals, Game 2 ) and Stanford ( WCWS semifinals ).    OU benefited greatly this season via the transfer portal, bringing in Haley Lee  from Texas A&M,  Alex Storako from Michigan, and Cydney Sanders and Alynah Torres from Arizona State. Bahl's transfer is the first major one in the modern portal era (to my knowledge) in the other direction. Nebraska becomes an instant national championship contender, in my mind. Other players around the country may find it attractive to join Bahl in Lincoln but even if
