Super-Regionals Begin Tonight in Two Series (2026)

This year's super-regionals get underway tonight with the beginning of two of the eight series (Tennessee-Georgia and Nebraska-Oklahoma State). As most readers would know, each series is two-out-of-three, with the winners advancing to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. The following chart shows all the matchups, with the teams' national seedings in parentheses.

Oklahoma State-Nebraska

Cornhuskers' Jordy Frahm, who has appeared in relief many times lately, starts tonight... OSU gets one runner on via infield hit in T1, but no runs. With two outs, Cowgirls' Lexi McDonald fouls off pitch after pitch, but finally swings and misses on Frahm change-up... Ruby Meylan pitching for OSU... Frahm bats leadoff for Nebraska with .421 average and 1.364 OPS... Frahm singles up the middle... Infield grounder gets Frahm at second, but throw to first not in time for double play... Lightning delay... Tonight's weather evidently never becomes conducive to resuming play, game postponed to tomorrow...

Georgia-Tennessee

It's been a battle of solo homers thus far, with Tennessee hitting two in B1 and Georgia hitting one in T2... Heading to the top of the fourth, still 2-1 Vols... Tennessee threatenng in B4 with runners on second and third, one out... Georgia pitching change, with Presley Harrison coming in... Sophia Knight, who hit one of Vols' solo-shots earlier, at the plate... Strikeout swinging at high pitch for second out, bringing up Ella Dodge... Dodge hits low hard liner caught in the air by Bulldog 3B Bailey Lindemuth (formerly of Texas Tech), keeping UGA within a single run... B5, Alannah Leach with -- you guessed it -- a solo-shot to give the Vols a little cushion, 3-1... Per ESPN graphic, this is Tennessee's first game with 3+ homers since April 13... T6, two-out walk and infield single (batter beating throw to first) gives UGA an opportunity to get back into the game... K ends threat... T7, last chance for Georgia to avoid falling behind 1-0 in the series... First batter retired... Sharp grounder down the 3B-line, originally called fair, is being reviewed. If call is upheld, UGA will have runner on second. Call stands, bringing tying run to the plate... Next batter beats out infield chopper, putting Bulldog runners on the corners, still with one out... HBP to load bases... Vol pitcher Karlyn Pickens perhaps slowing down... Tyler Ellison up for UGA... K for second out... Marisa Miller final chance for 'Dawgs...  Another K to end the game. My impression of Pickens running out of energy was certainly premature!

This Friday (and all remaining Fridays of the regular season), I will preview the upcoming weekend's games. Before doing so, I wanted to do an entry, primarily for sports fans who have not watched much softball, on differences they could expect to see between softball and baseball. The Sandy Plains Softball Association of Marietta, Georgia has produced a document entitled Fastpitch 101 , which details the similarities and differences in the rules of the two sports. Here are some of my own observations from over the years: 1. Because the bases are considerably closer together in softball (60 feet) than in baseball (90 feet), softball infielders consistently must pick up ground balls and make their throws to first base quickly, in order to get the runner. In other words, many (if not most) softball grounders result in "bang-bang" plays at first base, necessitating a lot of close calls by first-base umpires, who must detect whether the thrown ball (to the first-baseperso...
Washington used a first-inning grand-slam homer from pitcher Danielle Lawrie and some late insurance runs to defeat Georgia by a score of 9-3 in tonight's late game. The win gives U-Dub a spot in the best-of-three championship series against Florida starting Monday (Georgia had defeated Washington earlier today, 9-8 in nine innings, to force tonight's rematch). The Huskies thus claimed "top dog" status over Georgia on their side of the bracket. Florida got a two-out grand-slam homer from Ali Gardiner in the bottom of the seventh to edge Alabama 6-5. The Crimson Tide made a strong recovery in the tournament after looking "not ready for prime time" in an opening-round loss to Michigan. But, as a result of tonight's heartbreaking loss to the Gators, Bama is now eliminated. Lowrie's and Gardiner's grand-slams are among four that have been hit so far in this World Series.

Florida Shines at Kajikawa Classic

The University of Florida, ranked No. 14 and 15 in the two major national preseason polls, pulled two major upsets en route to an undefeated 5-0 performance at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic at Arizona State. Among the Gator victims were three Pac 12 schools: No. 3 Cal (by a score of 7-4), No. 5/6 Oregon (1-0), and No. 13/14 Arizona (14-3). Full results of the tournament are available here .
