2025 Super-Regionals Day 1

The 2025 super-regionals are underway. ESPN.com has a nice preview of them (link). Two games are on tap for tonight, No. 12-seed Texas Tech at No. 5-seed Florida State, and No. 11-seed Clemson at No. 6-seed Texas... All series are two-out-of-three to get to the Women's College World Series...

Clemson-Texas

After a long weather delay -- including lightning strikes -- the Tigers (visitors) and Longhorns are underway... B1, Texas goes up 1-0 when runner on first scores on a bunt that Clemson throws away (video)... No further scoring in the inning... T3, Tigers tie game 1-1 based on two singles and an infield error... With bases loaded and one out, Clemson double (with outfield error added in) drives in two, 3-1 Tigers... Fly-out to right doesn't advance runners, now two outs... K to end Clemson rally... B3, Mia Scott answers with solo shot for Longhorns, now 3-2 Clemson... B5, single, followed by a double to the wall in left give Horns two runners in scoring position with none out... Pop to SS for first out... Reese Atwood walked intentionally to load the bases... Fly-out to shallow left-center, runner from third easily out at the plate, Clemson retains 3-2 lead... T6, Tigers get first two on via walk and infield single... Weird play on grounder to short. Toss to third forces runner, but runner appears to "deke" Texas by getting up from slide and running home. Texas throws home to get runner who is already out, letting Clemson runner from first take third, with batter safe at first. If that weren't enough, original force-out at third being reviewed! Call is reversed, original runner from second now safe at third. Runner from first who had advanced safely to third is put back on second, and batter still at first. So, Tigers have bases loaded with none out... Texas pitching change... Hitting star Maddie Moore with ground single to left, making it 4-2 Clemson... Julia Knowler doubles to gap in right-center, bringing in two more (6-2 Clemson)... Runner from third scores on hard chopper that richochets from 1B-person to 2B-person, who throws batter out at first, now 7-2 Tigers with two out and runner on third... Ground-out to end Clemson rally... B6, Texas with a little two-out rally on double and infield single, runners on corners... Chopper in front of the plate, catcher eats the ball, bases loaded... Line-single up the middle scores two, cuts Horns' deficit to 7-4... Fly to center kills the rally... No further scoring, as Clemson takes Game 1, 7-4...

Texas Tech-Florida State

The Red Raiders lead 2-0. Tech scored single runs each in the first innning (based on two singles and an FSU throwing error) and the fourth (on an Alana Johnson homer; video). Seminoles come up in the bottom of the fifth, still looking for their first baserunner off of NiJaree Canady... Leadoff walk for the Noles... After a fly-out, TTU 1B- and 2B-persons both go for infield grounder, with no one covering first (ruled a hit)... FSU with runners on first and second, one out... Foul-out to left-fielder, two down... Strikeout swinging to end the Seminole threat, Canady extra-demonstrative in her celebration! T6, leadoff single for Tech, grounder between SS and 2B-bag... Back-to-back pop-ups to third for two out... This time a pop-up to the right side of the infield for third TTU out...  B6, FSU ground-out to first... Seminole batter hits dribbler toward first; looked like it would be a tough out, but ball hits batter on back of foot halfway down the first-base line for second out... Easy third out on grounder to 2B-person... T7, Canady blasts first pitch, opposite-field to right for homer, 3-0 Raiders... Bobbled grounder to first gives TTU a runner... Fly-out and pop-out for two down... Infield hit on chopper to short, Tech with runners on first and second... Fly to center for third out... B7, Seminoles need at least three runs or it will be down 1-0 in the series... Leadoff lined single to right... Foul pop near 1B for first out... Easy fly to RF for second out... Foul-out to left-fielder, ballgame...

NiJaree Canady Transferring to -- of All Places -- Texas Tech

NiJaree Canady, whose sub-1.00 ERA helped lead Stanford to the Women's College World Series in both her years with the Cardinal, announced on July 24 that she is transferring to Texas Tech. I've lived in Lubbock for 27 years and can say that the town has been improving with a greater selection of restaurants and shops, and a new downtown performing arts center. Likewise, nice new facilities have been dotting the Texas Tech campus . Still, it seems unlikely that Canady would have become a Red Raider without the $1 million annual Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal for her, made possible by the donation of a Texas Tech alumni couple. So stunning an event is this, even in the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, that the New York Times  even ran a behind-the-scenes story on Canady's path to Texas Tech. I look forward to being in the stands to watch Canady pitch next spring, an opportunity I never expected to have.

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

2024 WCWS -- Day 6

Oklahoma has kept its quest for a fourth straight WCWS title alive with a 6-5 eight-inning win over Florida to advance to the championship round. The Sooners will take on Texas in a two-out-of-three series beginning Wednesday night. Florida held a 5-2 lead after three innings and looked well on its way to beating OU for the second straight day, which would have eliminated the Sooners and taken the Gators to the final round. However, UF scored no further runs, whereas Oklahoma chipped away with two in the fourth, one in the sixth, and one in the eighth. The final run came via Jayda Coleman's opposite-field walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the eighth.  Sooner starter Kelly Maxwell went the distance, allowing only four hits. Three of those hits were home runs within the first three innings; the only other Gator hit was an infield single in the top of the sixth. Maxwell also walked five and struck out eight. Florida starter Keagan Rothrock also went the distance, allowing 1...
