WCWS Finals -- Game 1 (2019)

Oklahoma is the home team against UCLA in Game 1 of the championship round.

UCLA Top 1st: Aaliyah Jordan gives the Bruins a quick 1-0 lead with a two-out homer.

OU Bottom 1st: Nothing.

UCLA T2: Nothing.

OU B2: Shay Knighten goes yard to even things up, 1-1... As shown in this video, there's a yellow ribbon lining the top of the outfield fence all around, and the ribbon gets dislodged around where Knighten's ball landed. At first I thought the ball itself glanced off the ribbon and barely left the field. However, after looking over the replay a few times, it appears that the UCLA outfielder knocked off the ribbon and Knighten's ball went at least a few feet beyond the fence.

UCLA T3: The tie doesn't last long. A combination of UCLA singles and OU errors gives the Bruins a 3-1 lead. However, UCLA strands a runner on third.

OU B3: One-out triple to right for Grace Lyons. Probably would have been a single or double, but UCLA right-fielder misplays the ball. Judge for yourself... Pop up to shallow left for second out... Walk puts runners on the corners... Fly-out to warning track in right-center ends the threat...

UCLA T4: Kinsley Washington  goes opposite-field, doubling to the wall in left-center and driving in Colleen Sullivan, who had singled. 4-1 UCLA...

The game has gotten out of hand since I was doing the inning-by-inning updates. UCLA added one run in the fifth and six in the sixth, to take an 11-1 lead. In that sixth inning, UCLA's Brianna Tautalafua, who had been 0-for-26 in this postseason, homered. The Bruins moved starting pitcher Rachel Garcia (whose evening included a homer in that big sixth inning) to designated-player before the Sooner half of the sixth, presumably to conserve her arm for tomorrow's Game 2. Her replacement, Megan Faraimo, gave up a homer to Grace Green, making it 11-2.

As I write, UCLA has added three runs in the top of the seventh, to make it 14-2. And the Bruins have runners on first and second with none out... It's now 16-2, with UCLA still batting... The Sooners finally get out of the half-inning, and will come up in the bottom of the seventh... Holly Azevedo in to pitch for the Bruins... First OU batter retired on a pop-up... ESPN with interesting graphic, namely pointing out that UCLA pitchers have no strikeouts on the evening. All 19 UCLA defensive outs have been recorded on balls in play... OU has got runners on first and third... Azevedo with first strikeout tonight for UCLA pitching staff... Sydney Romero singles in a run, making it 16-3 UCLA... Pop-up to 1B ends the contest... UCLA leads series 1-0...

Washington used a first-inning grand-slam homer from pitcher Danielle Lawrie and some late insurance runs to defeat Georgia by a score of 9-3 in tonight's late game. The win gives U-Dub a spot in the best-of-three championship series against Florida starting Monday (Georgia had defeated Washington earlier today, 9-8 in nine innings, to force tonight's rematch). The Huskies thus claimed "top dog" status over Georgia on their side of the bracket. Florida got a two-out grand-slam homer from Ali Gardiner in the bottom of the seventh to edge Alabama 6-5. The Crimson Tide made a strong recovery in the tournament after looking "not ready for prime time" in an opening-round loss to Michigan. But, as a result of tonight's heartbreaking loss to the Gators, Bama is now eliminated. Lowrie's and Gardiner's grand-slams are among four that have been hit so far in this World Series.

Pitching Star NiJaree Canady Reportedly in the Transfer Portal

Stanford pitching ace NiJaree Canady has reportedly entered the transfer portal ( link ), having completed two seasons in the circle for the Cardinal. Stanford has made the WCWS in both of Canady's seasons on the team. Another school hit hard by the transfer portal is the University of Washington, with an exodus of eight Huskies . This list of the top ten players in the portal includes four from UW. Today is the final day of the 30-day window for players to enter the portal.

Florida Shines at Kajikawa Classic

The University of Florida, ranked No. 14 and 15 in the two major national preseason polls, pulled two major upsets en route to an undefeated 5-0 performance at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic at Arizona State. Among the Gator victims were three Pac 12 schools: No. 3 Cal (by a score of 7-4), No. 5/6 Oregon (1-0), and No. 13/14 Arizona (14-3). Full results of the tournament are available here .
