Play began yesterday in the Pac 12 conference, highlighted by defending NCAA champion Arizona State's extra-inning win over intrastate rival University of Arizona. In other action, Cal routed Stanford, and Washington defeated new member Utah. Oregon and Oregon State begin a three-game series today. With the conference now having nine softball-playing members, UCLA was the odd team out this weekend and is facing non-conference opposition. Longtime members USC and Washington State do not field softball teams, nor does newcomer Colorado.

Another conference in transition is the Big 12, which has already lost Colorado and (softball-playing) Nebraska and has Missouri and Texas A&M leaving next season for the SEC. The Tigers and Aggies are actually playing each other this weekend, with A&M having taken yesterday's opener.
